Clicker training is a wonderful technique to train your dog. The magic of this technique lies in the ease and speed with which you can get changes in the behavior of your dog. Although not required to have a clicker to apply this technique, you should have one. A clicker is a box that makes click-click when you squeeze. Note that “click” means pressing the clicker to make the sound.

How clicker training Clicker training is based on classical conditioning and operate conditioning. First you have to apply classical conditioning, making your dog associates the sound of the clicker with something pleasant (usually food). What follows is easy. Each time your dog performing the behavior you want to teach, you click and give him some reward. With a few repetitions, your dog will learned what you wanted to teach. After your dog frequently performed this particular behavior, you must add a command to the entire sequence.

For example, if you want to teach your dog to sit, you must first learn to do without the verbal command. Once you do frequently to receive your reward, you say “Sit” before he feels. For with the clicker you can mark the exact moment your dog performs the desired behavior, even if you’re not near him.
